Can anyone provide some insight on how you handle orientation sessions for new fellows that are starting their training at your program on July 1st and graduating from another institution's program on June 30th? Do you encounter obstacles with scheduling and attendance and if so can you provide feedback on how you tackle this issue? Thank you in advance!

We have two full weeks of orientation for residents. We require fellows to arrive in time for the second week (June 25 for this year's July 1 starts) to complete required orientation sessions. Sometimes they can come for a couple days each week, but not the whole second week. We will try to accommodate that if possible. If they are absolutely not able to arrive early, we delay their start until the start of the next block.

We ask incoming fellows to save vacation and if possible to attend our orientation. This doesn't always happen and if an incoming fellow is on a visa there isn't anything we can do until July 1. The incoming fellows are responsible for completing the electronic onboarding requirements prior to starting. We catch up on July 1 with them and the fellowships conduct their specific orientation on July 1.
