It seems categorical programs are asking for TYs to arrive for orientation earlier and earlier each year.

As a TY program not affiliated with a university, we have tried to accommodate some of our TY residents by allowing them to take vacation to leave prior to June 26th. We have required others to stay until June 26th to cover patient care needs.

I am curious to see how many TY programs allow their TY residents to leave one week to two weeks prior to the end of the academic year or if any of you require your TYs to stay until their contract ends at the end of June?

I agree this is a big problem for TY programs. I think it is important that our incoming TY residents let their subsequent categorical programs know that they will have to use vacation time to leave the TY program prior to June 30. They can inquire whether they are expected to report prior to July 1 (and if so, WHY). If they are told that orientation is conducted prior to July 1, they can inquire what the latest they can report for duty is. The more diligent categorical programs are already aware that they can't ask incoming residents to short change their TY clinical base year training and if they know that their incoming residents have to use up valuable vacation time from their TY year to leave early, they and their incoming residents can have a crucial conversation about why this should be earlier than July 1. I think this is the only thing fair to both sides.

Our TY begin officially one week prior to the beginning of their academic year therefore we allow them to leave without pay the last day of the intern roation, which is either June 24 or June 25. during the week overlap we have a buddy system which provides the incomoing residents an opportunity to take a mock call (within duty hours) to see how both a day shift and night shift are run. It also provides the interns advancing to PGY2 the same opportunity by taking a buddy call night so they are exposed to the change in level of responsibility.

Our residents reserve 10 PTO days to use in block 13 to allow them to leave 10 days early to move and start their categorical programs.
